In Sciencepreneurship, author Piero Formica explores the symbiotic relationship between science, entrepreneurship, and sustainable economic growth. He argues that like artists, writers and educators, scientists and entrepreneurs foster social progress and provide opportunities to advance sustainable and environmentally friendly economic development. Innovative and future thinking entrepreneurs play a special role in the advancement of science and technology. They help guide scientific discoveries into our daily lives and reveal new opportunities for social innovation as they exploit the discoveries that scientists make of the natural world. Sciencepreneurship argues that forward-thinking scientific entrepreneurs are well placed to take advantage of recent breakthroughs ranging from genetic sequencing to smartphone applications--innovations that have entered our lives at breakneck speed. Taking a transdisciplinary approach, which is one that integrates the natural, social and health sciences in a humanities context, Formica teaches readers, from academic researchers to engaged entrepreneurs, how to valorise science and entrepreneurship by designing a context of close, long-term interaction between the two.

This book explores the parallels between the Renaissance during the 14th to 16th centuries and the upheavals in human and physical sciences in the 21st Century that herald an insurgent entrepreneurial renaissance. The first Renaissance, conceived and developed in an urban environment, with the Medici family in Florence as pioneers, was a melting pot of art, culture, science and technology. It is in that context that entrepreneurship derived from artisan tradition and, hence, customized, was born to meet the demands and anticipate the needs of individual consumers. Starting with the mechanical technologies of the first industrial revolution, art, culture and science became separated from entrepreneurship. The latter took on Fordist features which depersonalized and, therefore, standardized the producer-consumer relationship. The emerging model of entrepreneurship returns to its origins in customization (e.g., 3D printing technologies, sharing/on-demand economy) strongly linked to the sequence "art-culture-science-technology." The road to a new entrepreneurial renaissance is traveled by cities with creative communities. These communities actively participate in promoting international talent mobility, encouraging connections among the knowledge nomads who move around the world and the resources and talents rooted locally. Brought back to life under the conditions of the current age, entrepreneurship is once again woven into the fabric of art, culture, science and technology, and contributing to civic identity and pride. Featuring case studies from local experts that highlight innovative initiatives and developments in diverse cities around the world, this book aims to stimulate deep thought, theories and applications in the fields of entrepreneurship and innovation.

The potential of storytelling as a research tool for enhancing the understanding of knowledge creation, acquisition and conversion into innovation and innovative business activities is the methodological underpinning of this book's narrative approach. The subtitle comes from Lynceus, one of the Argonauts who accompanied Jason to Colchis in his quest to find the Golden Fleece, who was said to have excellent sight. Among the various interpretations of the meaning of the Fleece, one version highlights the importance of discovery to innovation by voyaging to 'terrae incognitae' (unknown lands). This book is a narrative of a fictional voyage to the 'terra incognita' of Innoland -- the island of innovation and other mental travels that make sense of events and actions which spur innovation. Stories of Innovation for the Millennial Generation is written for Millennials willing to assimilate and grow dynamic, innovation-driven capabilities which lead to the creation of high-impact startups.
